Students from Janis Rozentals Riga Art Highschool participated in art action “Know Your Limit”, which was organized by the supermarket chain “Maxima” and Latvian traffic police on 21 June 2010 in Riga, Latvia.
In Latvia, 23 and 24 June is the Midsummer Day. By tradition Latvians celebrate the Midsummer by lighting bonfires, drinking beer and eating cheese. In previous years the Midsummer Day was tainted by many tragic traffic accidents caused by drunk drivers. Therefore, in 2010, two days before the Midsummer celebration the Traffic Police and supermarket chain “Maxima” held an exhibition of caricatures dedicated to the problem of alcohol abuse. Part of the exhibition was an on-site drawing activity where 3rd and 4th year art students, aged 19 – 20, of Janis Rozentals Riga Art Highschool drew caricatures of Latvian Traffic Police officers, to include the Chief of Traffic Police Edmunds Zivtiņš, and supermarket employees. This activity was aimed at increasing awareness of alcohol abuse and problems associated with alcohol while shoppers were preparing for the Midsummer festivities.

We visited the local Museum and we counted the religious symbols signifying protection in the art works of the collection ( 14- 17 century) , after that we talked about our daily symbols for self protection ; we looked into visual culture representations and we decided to make our own protecting image . This was the project for a blue ceramic tile, called azulejo in Portuguese ,In Portugal, some houses have protecting tiles outside. So we learned a lot about Tradition tile painting in Turkey , Holland and Portugal . We saw images of contemporary tiles made by artists in the Lisboa metro stations.
What do we wear often determines the others attitudes towards us.
A selfportrait was painted in new kind of clothes or uniform. It was interesting to study the image of the person in a new role.

My special place
A personal, strongly in the memories staying place. Technigue free, yet combining 2-and 3-dimensionality was recommended. Written memories were combined to the art works, too.
