The pupils are required to make a mood board (as an collage) and then swap the worksheets with a partner. Viewing the partners collage, the pupil has to provide three ideas for a present.

Identity

We discussed culural, geographical, historical contexts of the work by Daniel Blaufuks and the stories of our families. We discovered we are all mixed, our roots were spread out around the worls. Many students had african ancesters, one grand father was a nazi soldier, others were Portuguese soldiers in Africa, racism, colonisation and war issues were raised. Drawng out our family portraits we discovered things that our parents had kept in silence. All kind of archives were used; objects, photographs, post cards, oral histories. The end products were very different from drawing, to objects and collages. The important was the thinking process, drawing to unserstand ourselves.

Circle of Associations

The aim of this project was to provide a useful teaching method that could be used in art classes to enhance visual thinking with the purpose to help students understand and create art. I designed worksheets that help students to analyze selected works of art using associative images and a worksheet to create art. The phases to create art are: keywords, associative pictures and the final work of art based on keywords and pictures. The theme for the art work was „Personal painful memories“.

The role and art and artists on different eras

Anna Maria Solovjov. Realism and social realismArt work from different eras were analysed, links were made with society and phenomena of other areas of the period. A visual work was made based on the analysis. The task supports students to make connections between art, art history and society and raise the knowledge of the role of art and artists in different eras.

Art Action Know Your Limit

Students from Janis Rozentals Riga Art Highschool participated in art action “Know Your Limit”, which was organized by the supermarket chain “Maxima” and Latvian traffic police on 21 June 2010 in Riga, Latvia.
In Latvia, 23 and 24 June is the Midsummer Day. By tradition Latvians celebrate the Midsummer by lighting bonfires, drinking beer and eating cheese. In previous years the Midsummer Day was tainted by many tragic traffic accidents caused by drunk drivers. Therefore, in 2010, two days before the Midsummer celebration the Traffic Police and supermarket chain “Maxima” held an exhibition of caricatures dedicated to the problem of alcohol abuse. Part of the exhibition was an on-site drawing activity where 3rd and 4th year art students, aged 19 – 20, of Janis Rozentals Riga Art Highschool drew caricatures of Latvian Traffic Police officers, to include the Chief of Traffic Police Edmunds Zivtiņš, and supermarket employees. This activity was aimed at increasing awareness of alcohol abuse and problems associated with alcohol while shoppers were preparing for the Midsummer festivities.
